Our passion - the Cross

At the heart of Christianity is the Gospel - or good news - of Jesus Christ

How, though He was God, He became man and willingly surrendered His life by dying on the cross. But it was far more than just a gross miscarriage of justice – it was a supreme sacrifice, as He paid the price for sin.

So what is the Gospel all about?

What's Missing?

What are we here for? Is there a purpose to our lives? Is there something or someone bigger than us? Where do we go from here – when this life is over? These are big questions, and throughout the ages people have searched for answers – in religion, mystic spirituality, philosophy, relationships or pleasures. The missing ingredient is the living God, who created us. He made us to enjoy an amazing loving relationship with him. But our connection with God has been broken and we are now wandering alone and lost.

What has Gone Wrong?

It is not that God has forsaken us, but we have left him and gone our own way. We have rebelled against our Creator, despite all his goodness to us. We have fallen short of the people we were meant to be and it has led to wrong behaviour and attitudes (what the Bible calls sin). Not only do we suffer brokenness, pain and emptiness, but it also means that we must face God’s judgement and eternal condemnation.

The Answer

The good news is that God has provided a way back. He so loved the world that he gave his Son, Jesus, to be become a human being and deal with our sin and rebellion. It meant him dying an awful death on the cross, where he willingly gave his life as a sacrifice for sin. He took upon himself the judgement of God we deserve. Only by this could God forgive us and restore our relationship with him.

New Life

But the cross is not the last word. Three days later Jesus rose from the dead and now he offers us a new life – the forgiveness of sins and reconciliation with God. Through him the lost are brought home and the broken healed. He sets us on a new path where we walk in love for God and for others and delight to begin living the way God intended. This life begins the moment we turn from our own ways and put our faith in Jesus Christ. It comes with the promise of a wonderful future when we shall live forever in the fulness of this life in a perfect world.
